Spring into the Lakes: Perfect Walks to Shake Off Winter

Spring in the Lake District. The daffodils are bursting, lambs are frolicking, and the fells are slowly shedding their winter coat. It’s a magical time to explore this stunning corner of England, and after a long winter, what better way to do it than with a refreshing walk? Here are a few of our favourite spring walks in the Lake District, perfect for shaking off the cobwebs and embracing the season.

1. Rydal Water & Rydal Caves (Easy, Family-Friendly):

This classic loop is ideal for a gentle spring stroll, offering stunning views without requiring a mountain-climbing expedition. Starting from Rydal village, the path meanders along the shores of Rydal Water, showcasing the lake’s tranquil beauty. The highlight, however, is exploring Rydal Caves. These impressive, man-made caverns, remnants of slate quarrying, provide a fascinating and slightly adventurous detour.

Why it’s great for spring: Low-level, easy to navigate, and bursting with spring colour, the caves offer shelter if there’s a passing shower, too!

Top Tip: Pack a picnic and enjoy it by the lake.

2. Aira Force Waterfall (Moderate, Woodland Wonder):

The power of Aira Force is amplified in spring, as the recent rains feed the cascading waterfall. This walk, starting from the National Trust car park, takes you through ancient woodland, alive with bluebells and birdsong. Follow the well-maintained paths as they wind their way alongside the beck, leading to the dramatic main waterfall.Top Tip: Take your time to explore the various viewpoints and bridges along the route.

Why it’s great for spring: The woodland setting is a riot of spring colour and the waterfall is at its most impressive.

3. Orrest Head, Windermere (Easy, Panoramic Views):

For a relatively short walk with maximum reward, Orrest Head is hard to beat. This was Alfred Wainwright’s first Lakeland fell, and it’s easy to see why he fell in love with the area. From the summit, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of Windermere, the surrounding fells, and the village of Windermere itself.

Top Tip: Combine this walk with a visit to Windermere town for a post-walk treat.

Why it’s great for spring: A relatively easy climb with a huge payoff. The views are spectacular, and the spring sunshine makes them even more magical.
